(Also Long Overdue) Images from a Trip to the SW

I just added a handful of images from a November 2022 vacation. It was our second camper van rental experience, and while we had a few issues with the vehicle that forced us change plans (including skipping a Grand Canyon visit), we did enjoy some time at some gorgeous destinations, including Josha Tree National Park, where three of the images below were captured. The theme of the images seems to be fleeting moments of light, such as the fading sunset light in the image below. 

Mars on Earth Joshua trees are amazingly beautiful and yet so odd that they can be finicky photo subjects. These two images were made in brief moments when the light was somehow highlighting the oddness of the trees, separating them from the background (each image doing so in opposite ways). The mysterious light of the first image works well with the suspiciously not healthy tree individual. The second image makes the fuller canopies shine agains the dark background, with the particular rock formations in the background adding to the sense of an otherworldly landscape.

Spiky and Smooth Another example of a fleeting light moment was captured during a short hike, when this boulder briefly separated itself from everything around it. It was a satisfying moment to have the camera at hand even on a middle of the day hike in a dreary day, when you might not have expected to capture anything. 

Desert Trophy My favorite image from the bunch is the capture below of this tree trunk and yellow thicket. The deep darkness around the trunk inspires a sense of mystery, making for a somewhat gloomy image in spite of all of the Fall colors... Maybe that's why I like it so much? Do I need to figure out how to make more sad and dreary Fall color images? Just a thought. Maybe we can just call it whimsy.
